Agriculture contributes around 0.5% to the United Kingdom’s economy. It provides half of the food we eat, employs almost half a million people and is a key part of the food and drink sector.

The impact of agriculture on our economy and lifestyles can’t be underestimated. Not only does it feed the population, but it also provides jobs for more than 500,000 people, placing it as a central facet of the food and drink industry.

Agricultural practices cover all activities that can occur on a farm or croft and include activities such as slurry spreading, chemical and waste storage, silage making and waste pesticide disposal. The waste stream may include a range of items and materials that are not specific to agriculture, such as packaging waste, tyres, batteries, scrap machinery and oil. In addition, there will be waste that is more specific to the sector, such as pesticide containers, silage wrap, etc.

Agricultural waste disposal takes care of ‘waste from premises used for agriculture within the meaning of the Agriculture Act 1947, the Agriculture (Scotland) Act 1948 or the Agriculture Act (Northern Ireland) 1949'. Agriculture may, therefore, include some activities undertaken by the HFE sector, such as:

  • Horticulture
  • Fruit growing
  • Seed growing
  • Dairy farming and livestock breeding and keeping
  • The use of land as grazing land, meadow land, market gardens and nursery grounds
  • The use of land for woodlands where that use is ancillary to the farming of land for other agricultural purposes

The agriculture industry produces a significant amount of waste per year, all of which requires its own unique method of disposal.

At Novus Environmental, we provide farming, horticultural and equine businesses with efficient and cost-effective agricultural waste management solutions. We have been servicing the industry for many years, so we have fine-tuned our approach to ensure we can deliver meaningful cost savings whilst helping increase operational efficiency, improve levels of sustainability, and ensure compliance with UK waste regulations.
